Easily one of the legends of Indian cricket, especially in the longest format of the game. We’re talking about 38-year old Ravichandran Ashwin from Tamil Nadu, who revolutionised the role of a spin-bowling all-rounder in Test cricket for India. Today, this loyal servant of Indian cricket has called it time on his international career, in between the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
The 3rd Test was underway at The Gabba and India was in all sorts of trouble, only for the rain to come and save them during the Test. Currently, the series is level 1-1 after this third game was drawn and while the rain was being persistent on the final day’s final session, we saw Ravi Ashwin having some emotional moments with his teammates as well as opponents.
Ravi Ashwin has emotional retirement moment with Kohli
While it was pelting down, the camera panned on to Virat Kohli and Ashwin in the team balcony, where the two shared an emotional hug along with some deep conversation. Initially, it was all just wild speculation from our end, but there were a few journalists on Twitter (now X) who also started talking about a ‘BIG ANNOUNCEMENT’ coming soon.

It was imminent, considering it’s not common to see Ashwin not being picked as the leading spinner. He wasn’t picked in the 1st Test at Perth, and then managed only 29 runs and 1 wicket in the 2nd Test in Adelaide, only to be dropped once again. Maybe that was the catalyst to him making this decision, ending an illustrious career down under.

The post-match presentation was conducted by Ravi Shastri who spoke to Travis Head (Man of the Match) followed by both the captains, Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins. Post that, we went straight to the post-match conference where Ravi Ashwin sat down with Rohit and began saying that he doesn’t want to make this much about himself.
Ravichandran Ashwin retirement announced
He quicky addressed the journalists and mentioned that he’s had a great career and it’s now going to be his last day as an international cricketer. He said that he doesn’t want to take any questions on the topic and kept it super shorter, as the Ravi Ashwin retirement was announced. His speech lasted less than a minute and didn’t take any questions on it.

He spoke about how he was very thankful to the BCCI and his teammates, and all the coaches he’s played with over the years. Rohit then took questions and said that Ashwin was very sure about this decision, and that the decision is very personal. He mentioned that he heard of Ashwin’s retirement plans when he came to Perth, and a lot of things went behind him making this decision.
Coming to his international career, Ashwin made his limited overs debut in 2010 and played his last T20I in 2022, followed by his last ODI in 2023. He bagged 156 ODI wickets and 72 T20I wickets, along with a record 537 Test wickets under his belt. He ends as the 7th highest wicket-taker in Test cricket in his 106 Tests, second only to Anil Kumble in terms of Indian bowlers.
Ashwin believed that if he wasn’t needed on this tour, this was the right time to step away. He will continue to stay associated with the game, and it’s going to be exciting to continue watching him in action in the IPL and other tournaments too.
