Vignesh Puthur stats so far

The 24-year old orthodox spinner is yet to play a professional game for Kerala, but he debuted at the biggest stage. That’s the benefit of having multiple sporting teams under the same franchise, across the world. MI Family has the MI Cape Town team that plays in the SA20 League in South Africa, and Puthur was first seen there where he was called up on as a nets bowler.

As a net bowler with the team, he was spotted by captain Rashid Khan and that’s how he was fast-tracked into the Mumbai Indians team for IPL 2025, where he was picked at the most recent mega auction for Rs. 30 Lakh. But little did we know that he’d be a part of the main side in their first game of the season itself.

Vignesh Puthur IPL 2025 record

Prior to 23rd March 2025, Vignesh Puthur’s IPL 2025 record was nothing. However, he was brought on as an impact substitute for the former captain Rohit Sharma, and he made an immediate impact for the side. He picked up the wicket of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in his first over, followed by the wicket of the big-hitting Shivam Dube in his second over.

From being an absolute unknown played a few hours back, Puthur was suddenly pumped up after picking up 2 wickets, those of two vital Chennai batsmen. Earlier in the day, MI put up a poor batting performance of 156 in their 20 overs, which didn’t give Puthur and the other MI bowlers a lot to defend during the second innings.

Vignesh was brought on for a third consecutive over and he picked up another wicket, this one of Deepak Hooda on his debut for the CSK franchise. All three fell int he same fashion, as they tried to take on the young bowler from Malappuram, but ended up getting caught in the outfield.

This isn’t the first time Mumbai has brought someone with high potential from their scouting team. In the past, they unveiled great players like Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Verma, Nehal Wadhera, and many others. Hopefully, the Vignesh Puthur career will kick off after this fantastic debut, and we may get to see plenty more of him un time to come.
