Who Was Mitchell Starc’s First Test Wicket?

It has been an illustrious cricketing career, for Mitchell Starc. He made his ODI debut as a young and exciting left-arm pacer for Australia in 2010, followed by his Test debut in 2011, and finally the T20I debut in 2012. Since then, he’s managed to maintain his fitness and dominate across all three formats, as one of the most lethal opening bowlers in the world.

On this page, we’re going to take a walk down memory lane and answer the question – “Who was Mitchell Starc’s first Test wicket?” It was the end of the season in 2011, in the 1st Test of the New Zealand tour of Australia 2011, with the game being played at Brisbane. At the time of making his Test debut and getting his first scalp in the format, Starc was only 21 years old!

Mitchell Starc first wicket in Test cricket

The 1st Test was being played between 1-4 December 2011 and Starc was bowling as the first change bowler on Day 1, after James Pattinson and Peter Siddle shared the new ball. Starc had to wait for the 5th over of his spell before finally finding success, and he got it in the form of one of New Zealand’s most explosive opening batters – Brendon McCullum.

McCullum was dismissed for 34(51) and Starc jumped in delight followed by being engulfed by his teammates. The ball was shortish outside off and McCullum cut it to David Warner at point. Incidentally, Warner was also making his debut in this Test match, and the duo of Starc and Warner paired up again to get the former’s second wicket a few overs later in Jesse Ryder.

Starc got Jesse Ryder with a similar ball outside off and short, which was cut away to gully this time. He ended with figures of 2/90 in his quota of 20 overs while he didn’t have much of a contribution in the 2nd innings. James Pattinson picked up 5/27 in that innings and Starc could only manage 0/33 in 6 overs. Take a look at the moment Starc picked his 1st Test wicket:

Australia were set 19 runs to win in the final innings of that game, and they completed an easy 9-wicket win. Starc picked up 2/30 in the 2nd Test and ended up 4 wickets in the series. What followed is all history as Starc went on to become one of Australia’s leading pacers across formats. In the Test format itself, he has 369 wickets in 91 games as of 9th Dec 2024.

Starc will always remember the moment of his 1st Test wicket being Brendon McCullum but since then, he has broken several records for Australia. As of now, he’s their fourth highest wicket-taker of all-time in Test cricket, only behind Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, and his current teammate Nathan Lyon; he’s the second highest on the list in terms of pacers.

Starc seems to be fit to play another couple of years of Test cricket and we’d love to see him hit the 400-wicket milestone some there. In terms of current cricketers, Pat Cummins is next to him with 279 career Test wickets. For similar cricket updates from around the world, remember to always stay tuned to ReadScoops.com.
