For an international batsman, scoring a century in One Day International (ODI) or even Test Cricket is a huge milestone, and batsmen dream of hitting one every time they walk out on the pitch. However, times are changing now, as ‘double centuries‘ are now creeping into the game, even in the shorter versions. Batsmen are getting better and the blades are getting bigger as we speak.
Slightly over a decade ago, one would only laugh at you if you mentioned getting a double hundred in ODI cricket; it was a feat one could only achieve in test cricket, if time is on their side. However, India’s Sachin Tendulkar changed that when he created history and got to 200* against South Africa in 2010. Since then, many other international batsmen have reached this milestone. Australia women’s batter Belinda Clark was incidentally the first to score a double century in an ODI way back in 1997, when she scored a murderous 229* against Denmark. It took 13 years for the first male cricketer to do so, when Sachin scored his. However, the list kept increasing after Sachin and there are 9 ODI double centuries so far in the men’s ODI game, last updated 18th January 2023.
6 out of the 8 double hundreds ever scored in men’s ODI have been achieved by Indians, and 3 of those belong to Rohit Sharma, who also holds the list for the highest individual score in ODI cricket (both men’s and women’s), amassing 264(173) against Sri Lanka in 2014. He isn’t just the only person to have 3 double hundreds, but no other batsman has even 2 double hundreds to their name.

The first four double hundreds in men’s ODI cricket were all scored by Indian batsmen, until Chris Gayle and Martin Guptill changed that trend in the 2015 ICC World Cup, where Gayle became the first batsman to get a double century in an ICC World Cup game. All of Rohit Sharma’s double hundreds have come in India, with two of them against Sri Lanka and one against Australia. He got them in 2013, 2014, and 2017, which you can say was the golden period of his career. Rohit’s 264 holds several records including the highest strike rate from among all these double hundreds in ODIs (152.60), and the most numbers of boundaries in an innings – 33.
In terms of sixes hit in an individual innings, Gayle’s double hundred holds the record as he hit 16 of them in that ODI against Zimbabwe in the World Cup. Quite a few players have come close and narrowly missed out on an ODI double century, including Charles Coventry (194*) in 2009 and Saeed Anwar (194) all the way back in 1997. Zaman missed two double hundreds, scoring 193 in 2021 against South Africa.
