While cricket has always been the most loved sport in this country, a few other sports have gained prominence in India in recent years. This is mostly because of commercialised leagues which are televised, have several sponsorship and merchandise deals, having big bumper salaries for players, and much more. One such sports that came to the fore in 2014 was kabaddi.
The sport rose to fame with the emergence of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) and it was an instant hit, achieving record viewership numbers that not many would’ve seen happening. And because of that, PKL grew to become a household name, with millions of sports fans waiting for the new kabaddi season year on year. As on date, eight successful Pro Kabaddi seasons have taken place!
Obviously with viewership and bigger brands backing PKL, the tournament grew from strength to strength over the years and seasons. After having 8 franchise teams for the first four seasons, as many as 12 kabaddi franchises now take part in every PKL season, with the number of players participating also increasing with every new season.
