It’s been a tough time for international sports. It’s been almost a couple of months since we last had some international cricketing action, with all of the live series being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, BCCI and Cricket South Africa and here with some good news; good news after a really long time.
The two cricket boards have earmarked some dates for late August for the to countries to play their series of 3 T20Is, which was initially supposed to be played in March 2020. However, both boards have agreed that this will be only if the governments have reached a conclusion that it’s safe to play, given the virus situation.
The series depends totally on the condition in India at the time, and it won’t take place if both countries don’t give the go-ahead. While BCCI’s willingness to host the series is evident, the two boards are not averse to hosting the series at a later date is safety is still a concern in the months to come.
“India wants to honour its agreement. If it’s postponed, maybe a bit later. We’ve had a very good discussion with them (BCCI). We’re seeking via Sascoc an audience with the sports minister to be given approval to, if needed, play behind closed doors. This will relate specifically to the potential of an incoming Indian tour,”” said Cricket South Africa CEO Jacques Faul at a virtual press conference today, 21st May 2020.
However, there are a lot of conditions to be met if the series has to actually take place. Firstly, players have to be transported to a green zone for a conditioning camp. If all is on track, the series will take place. If BCCI is in good terms with CSA, it could also mean they have their support to host IPL 2020 at a later date rather than the ICC T20 World Cup.
