This is one of the oldest tournaments hosted across international cricket, called the ICC Champions Trophy. Always being played in the 50-over forma, the competition used to be called the ICC Knockout Trophy, with a minimum of 8 teams and a maximum of 12 participating teams in any edition from start till date.
That start was in 1998 with the first ICC Knockout Trophy taking place in Bangladesh. The name ‘Knockout Trophy’ only lasted for the first couple of editions, at a time when the competition was played every 2 years. Now a quadrennial event, there have been eight successfully completed ICC Champions Trophy editions from 1998 till date.
On this page, we’ve put together an ICC Champions Trophy winners list (or an ICC Knockout Trophy winners list), including results of every final played till now. South Africa, a team that has been known to choke in ICC events, is incidentally the first team to win this title, beating West Indies in the 1998 Champions Trophy final. And that remains their only ICC title thus far.

Australia is the only team to win the tournament twice in a row, between 2006 and 2009. We’ll update the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 winners once the tournament comes to an end. This is a much-awaited competition because it returns after 8 years, with Pakistan last lifting the title in UK in 2017. India is the most consistent side in the tournament, winning twice in 2002 and 2013, and reaching the finals on two more occasions in 2000 and 2017.

The 2002 Champions Trophy winners were India and Sri Lanka, shared because of bad weather conditions. Here, the game was restarted on the reserve day but that was washed out as well. After two unsuccessful attempts at finding a winner, the trophy was shared and that’s the only time such an event has taken place in the ICC Champions Trophy. the 2025 Champions Trophy is the first time Sri Lanka failed to qualify:

Individually, we’ve seen some great performances in Champions Trophy finals over the years. However, only one man has won the Man of the Match award in two different Champions Trophy finals – Shane Watson – who was awarded the same in both the 2006 and the 2009 finals. Ravindra Jadeja and Fakhar Zaman are two active players who can replicate this in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
