The world came to a halt last night as millions of people across the globe tuned in to watch Argentina vs France. It was the 2022 FIFA World Cup final taking place at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar and there wasn’t a single football fan on the planet who wasn’t picking sides. Light or dark blue? Messi or Mbappe? Lloris or Martinez?
All the questions were being asked but eventually, the game was 3-3 at the end of 120 minutes and it went down to penalties to choose the next World Cup winner. And just when you thought we’d get 5 penalties each in before we have any drama, Argentina decided to go ahead right away with a couple of saves from their hero of last night, Emiliano Martinez.
What did Emiliano Martinez’s lewd gesture mea?
When he saved the penalties, he went on to pull out a David Brent-style dance and his eccentric behaviour and mentality was one of the main reasons he managed to get the French players to miss the target on a couple of occasions. Eventually, he was even awarded the FIFA Golden Glove Award for the saves he made in this FWC 2022 final as well as in games right through the tournament.
He stepped on to the podium and went on to collect the prestigious Golden Glove trophy which has been presented to some of the most iconic and legendary goal-keepers in the world over the years. However, he did something that not many of his fans or Argentina football fans in general would’ve been too proud of.

He collected the golden trophy and immediately stuck it to his crotch and decided to bring out this weird and lewd gesture and/or celebration with millions of people watching. And while the Argentine fans were celebrating right through the game, there was a bit of an awkward silence when Emi Martinez did this, as the fans were trying to figure out what he just did. He picked up the trophy and immediately made this gesture, as you can see above. Towards the end of the game, he made another gesture which was not as prominent on television as this one. The internet was full of comments on the incident, and Pakistani singer Adnan Sami also tweeted about it, saying:

In short, we’re not too sure about what the celebration meant or why he did it. He didn’t speak about it at any interviews or wasn’t even asked about it. But the eccentric goal-keeper may have just gotten carried away in the moment and did something which he won’t be too proud about. In the moment, he was immature and a bit disrespectful as well.
