#BREAKING: Just a few minutes ago, England football captain Wayne Rooney announced his retirement from international football. Yes, you read that right – the England skipper has decided to hang up his boots and he will not play in England colours again ⚽.
Rooney just released a statement saying England manager Gareth Southgate called him earlier today, wanting him to be a part of England’s squad for the upcoming matches. While Rooney really appreciated this, he informed Gareth that he had already made the decision of retiring from international football – with immediate effect.
Wayne said that he had discussed this with only his family, his manager at Everton and his closest friends, before coming to a decision. He said that while he enjoyed every minute of playing for England, he now wishes to put all his energy into helping Everton be successful.
Just 31 years of age, Rooney wasn’t in the limelight over the last couple of years playing for Manchester United. In the recent transfer window, Rooney made headlines as he moved back to his boyhood club (Everton FC) after a long span of 13 years of service at Old Trafford.
It was a tough decision for him to move from Manchester to Everton, and another tough decision followed with wanting to retire from international duties. However, Rooney said that he put in a lot of hard thought before coming to this decision.
The striker was dropped from the England squad for fixtures against Scotland and France in June, and this time, he rejected Southgate’s call back, ending what was a 14-year career with England. He has scored twice in two games so far in the Premier League and that’s what may have prompted Southgate to call him back.
Wayne stated that his only regret would be not being able to be successful with England in any major world tournaments. He mentioned that he was always very passionate as a player and now will be equally passionate as a fan of England football. It’s sad that we won’t even get to see Rooney in a farewell game 🙁 Leave your comments and let us know how you feel.
