While cricket is the leading and most commercial sport in India, there are a few other franchise leagues coming up in kabaddi, football, volleyball, badminton, and other sports too. The first one to follow the lines of the IPL in cricket was football’s very own Indian Super League (ISL). They set up shop in India in 2014 and ever since, there’s been no looking back.
There has been a number of team and format changes ever since ISL inception in 2014 and now, it’s a much larger even than it was initially. From 61 matches in the inaugural ISL season to as many as 115 matches in ISL 2021-22, the tournament has come a long way and there’s still a long way to go. ISL is here to stay and help shape Indian football and today, we’ll take a small walk down memory lane in ISL history…
A short and sweet first season took place in 2014 and after each team played 14 games, it was Atlético de Kolkata who emerged victorious and became the first ever ISL champions. Post that, the format changed a little bit and ever since the ISL 2019-20 season, there’s even something called the ‘Premiers’ which is the title awarded to the league season table toppers.

The Kolkata franchise was initially called Atlético de Kolkata and they’re the most successful team in ISL history, having won 3 titles over the years – two under the Atlético de Kolkata name in 2014 and 2016 – and one called when they were rebranded to ATK at ISL 2019-20. Later, the ATK team merged with Mohun Bagan AC to form ATK Mohun Bagan FC. The franchise has reached a total of four ISL finals.
The only other franchise so far to have won more than one ISL title is Chennaiyin FC and they won it twice – once at ISL 2015 and the other at ISL 2017-18. Chennaiyin also made the final of ISL 2020-21, meaning a total of three ISL finals to their name. Mumbai City, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad are three other franchises to have lifted an ISL trophy over the seasons.
We’ve seen several individual performers over the years here too, with one of the most iconic ISL players till date being Bartholomew Ogbeche who has only been around since ISL 2018 onwards but he’s the top scorer in the ISL history, with 53 goals to his name in only 77 appearances. Till date, no player has been awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ in two separate ISL finals yet.
