We all know about the FIFA World Cup that has been taking place between the most competitive football playing nations in the world, since all the way back in 1930. The biggest global event in men’s football was then replicated to take place for the women as well, called the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the first edition of this women’s football tournament took place in China in 1991.
It may not have a long history as the men’s competition but the FIFA Women’s World Cup has seen some exciting games and fantastic finals finishes as well over the years. Taking place once in four years with no deviations or editions skipped since inception, the tournament has a total of four (4) different winners across eight completed editions, updated as of 22nd July 2023…
The inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1991 was played in China and it was United States of America (USA) that emerged victorious, beating Norway 2-1 in that historic final. The FIFA Women’s World Cup began in 1991 with only 12 participating teams, but it’s grown much quicker than we would’ve expected. They grew to a 16-team event by only the third edition in 1999 and then moved to a 24-team format from the 2015 World Cup onwards. The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is a historic one as it matches the men’s tournament of 32 teams for the first time ever.
