We don’t need to sit down and introduce Cristiano Ronaldo to you, do we? Arguably the most popular sports figure across the world, Ronaldo represents a culture, not just a sport. His competitive spirit and his supreme levels of fitness have made him an inspiration to millions of people across the world.
The Portuguese national side and Juventus striker is always in the news and today, he’s back again. This time, it’s because he’s the first ever footballer to cross $1 billion in lifetime career earnings. No one else in this sport has crossed this milestone in the past and it’s no surprise that Ronaldo is the first to breach this barrier.
The superstar has $650 million through football earnings in his career while the rest comes in through endorsements and other activities off the pitch. While he’s the first to do so in football, he’s only the third sportsman overall to reach this billion dollar club, joining golfer Tiger Woods and boxer Floyd Mayweather.
Looking at the numbers, Ronaldo earned $105 million this year through his football, which was only behind Roger Federer in terms of pre-tax earnings for the year. His fierce competitor and rival Leo Messia has earned $605 million in his football career so far, but that’s mostly because he’s played at Barcelona through his career and not jumped clubs like Cristiano.
The 35-year old Ronaldo has played at Manchester United, Real Madrid and now Juventus while having 5 Ballon D’Or awards and other achievements through his illustrious football career. With 222 million Instagram followers, he’s also the most followed athlete on Instagram and it’s no surprise he’s reached this level in terms of career earnings!
