Daryl Mitchell Smashes 4 Consecutive Sixes vs Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka tour of New Zealand 2024-25 included a series of 3 T20Is which New Zealand won with a game to spare. Coming into the 3rd T20, they had already wrapped up the series but there was pride to play for, for both sides. Sri Lanka started really well with 218 in their essay, but it wasn’t going to be easy as the pitch at the Saxton Oval in Nelson was a belter.

New Zealand started well but lost both their openers in Tim Robinson and Rachin Ravindra during the middle overs. Daryl Mitchell came in to bat at number #5 when the score was 112/3 and he went at the bowlers right from the start. In the 15th over, he took a liking towards the bowling of Charith Asalanka, the Sri Lankan captain.

Daryl Mitchell Smashes 4 Consecutive Sixes vs Sri Lanka

Daryl Mitchell – 4 consecutive sixes

After a single on the first ball, Mitchell hit four consecutive sixes against the off-spinner, smashing him for 6, 6, 6, 6 and changing the equation altogether. At the start of that over, the required rate was nearly 13 runs per over and by the end of this over, it came down to around 10 per over. The over read 1, 6, 6, 6, 6, 0.

Mitchell looked likely to finish off and get a fifth consecutive six however, he missed out on the last ball which drifted towards the wide line and many would’ve thought could’ve been signalled a wide as well. Either way, Asalanka would’ve counted himself lucky to get out of that onslaught and end with only 25 runs given from that over.

Asalanka started that over with figures of 3/25 in 3 overs but ended with 3/50 after his spell of 4 overs. However, it was all downhill from there on as the hosts lost 3 wickets for 2 runs in the next few minutes. And from a position of being in the driver’s seat, New Zealand nose-dived and ended up losing far too many wickets for their liking.

Mitch Hays and Glenn Phillips went cheaply and once Mitchell himself was dismissed, the game was done and dusted. Eventually, NZ needed 22 runs to get off the last over and they ended up falling short of the target by 7 runs. For similar cricketing updates from around the world, remember to always stay tuned to ReadScoops.com.
