Two teams that have been the most consistent in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years, winning 10 of the 17 seasons between them so far – Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Recently during the IPL 2025 season, CSK became the first team to be knocked out of contention, and seeing them at the bottom of an IPL points table is not something any of us are used to.
Let’s have a proper look at why CSK isn’t quite firing on all cylinders in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher for many a cricket aficionado, considering their consistent track record over the years. However, a closer inspection reveals a confluence of factors that appear to be contributing to their less-than-stellar performance this season.

1) Batting inconsistencies
While they possess some formidable names on paper, the collective firepower hasn’t quite translated into consistent high scores. They paid the big bucks for New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra but he’s only got one fifty in 8 games in IPL 2025. Similarly, Rahul Tripathi has been failing with a season of poor form, and there’s no anchor in the middle order who has been consistently scoring runs either. Not a single player from the Chennai side is a part of the top 15 runs scorers on the Orange Cap race, which is worrisome.
2) Injuries and misses
The biggest issue is the fact that they lost their biggest batsman and most consistent run scorer to an injury, early in the season. Ruturaj Gaikwad is a heavy run scorer and he was ruled out of IPL 2025 due to an elbow injury. New Zealand star batter Devon Conway also had to return home due to the death of his father, only adding to their batting woes.

3) Inexperienced bowling attack
They’ve got young Afghani spinner Noor Ahmad who has been taking wickets consistently during the season, but he’s leaked runs at crucial times, proving his lack of experience. Similarly, Matheesha Pathirana and Anshul Kamboj, their leading pacers, have been good but there’s not a lot of experience in this bowling attack, with the only possible exception of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
4) Poor show at the auction
It all comes down to the fact that Chennai may have missed a few tricks at the IPL 2025 auction, and the fact that they weren’t able to build a balanced squad. Most other IPL teams have been picking dashers at the top of the order, with record scores in powerplays witnessed in recent years. It’s not uncommon to get 70+ in their first 6 overs now, but CSK has no batter who can give them this kind of a start. Bringing in South Africa’s Dewald Brevis may help solve this problem of lowered strike rates, scoring 42(25) in his first game of IPL 2025.

5) IPL competitiveness
Let’s not forget the fact that while CSK hasn’t been at their best, the IPL itself has raised it’s quality and competitiveness. Many times, CSK came short of completing big chases, and the situation would’ve been different if they won those 3-4 games. With 10 games in the competition, someone is always going to perform and the others are not going to make the cut. And given their rich history in the league, we don’t want to be too harsh against CSK. Maybe they’ll turn it around in IPL 2026!
