Zimbabwe Beat Australia in 3rd ODI – Best Twitter Reactions

It’s been a tough journey for Zimbabwe in international cricket over the last decade or so, but it’s good to see them getting results over the last couple of months. They beat Bangladesh at home recently and then gave India a run for their money at home, before making a historic 2022 Zimbabwe tour of Australia happen in Aug/Sep 2022.

Just three ODIs were scheduled on the tour and after losing the first couple of 50-over games, Zimbabwe wanted to make a statement in the 3rd ODI and they did exactly that. They bowled out Australia for just 141 and then though they had hiccups in the chase, they managed to get over the line and complete a historic victory at Townsville, registering a 3-wicket victory.

David Warner scored 94 out of Australia’s 141 and recorded nearly 70% of the runs scored. Wickets fell like nine pins around him and his knock was surely one that went in vain. The next best score in the team was Glenn Maxwell’s 19 and in fact, Maxi was the only other batter to get into double figures in the Australian innings.

With the ball, it was all-rounder Ryan Burl who made the biggest difference for Zimbabwe, picking up his career best ODI figures and his maiden 5-fer, getting figures of 5/10 in just 3 overs bowled in the game. It was only last year that Burl jokingly tweeted about having a sponsor so they don’t need to glue up their shoes after every game. And now, they’ve beat a full-strength Aussie team in their backyard.

In the chase, Zimbabwe also lost wickets more than needed, as they slipped from 38/0 to 77/5 and viewers were getting ready to see a 0-3 whitewash being completed. However, it was the captain who led the attack with the bat as Regis Chakabva ensured he took them across the line with a fighting knock of 37(72)*.

Former Indian opening batsman Virender is super active on Twitter and he also was quick to comment on the game, calling it one of the greatest upsets in ODI cricket history. Zimbabwe rarely get the chance to travel down under and when they did, they proved that that can do better than many other Test playing nations who struggle to get wins in Australia.

The win and the tour in general came at a time when a lot of focus is on other sporting events including CPL 2022, the Asia Cup 2022, and The Hundred 2022 in England. Ryan Burl was awarded the man of the match while Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa took home the award for player of the series. Australia won the series but Zimbabwe goes home the much happier side after this tour!
