It’s the first time that women’s cricket has been added to the Commonwealth Games and out of all the participating nations in this T20 women’s cricket competition, India W reaches the final where they’re facing off against Australia W. This is the only opposition they’ve lost to in this tournament and also, it’s a historic gold medal game at Birmingham.
It doesn’t get bigger than this especially for a team like India Women, who have been giving it their best for years but are yet to get their hands on some silverware. And while the pressure was at an all-time high in this CWG 2022 final at Edgbaston, there was a light moment that cut the pressure towards the fag end of the game. Yastika Bhatia falls and Team India enjoys!
India was chasing 162 to win the gold medal game at CWG 2022 on 7th August 2022. They were cruising at one point but a flurry of wickets meant it was heading towards a nail-biting finish. And while she would’ve hoped to not be needed in the chase, wicket-keeper batter (and concussion substitute in the game) Yastika Bhatia was indeed needed to help India get over the line.
The team was sitting in the dugout by the boundary rope and Bhatia was all padded up, waiting to get out there when her chance came. It came at the fall of the 7th wicket and as she moved forward to enter the ground, her right foot hit the advertising hoarding and she fell awkwardly in front of her full team.

And while it was the most tense time of the game, her Team India teammates definitely saw the funny side of it. Her teammates including the likes of Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, and Jemimah Rodrigues burst out laughing, for a minute completely forgetting about the chase taking place. See the video of the fall here:
Yastika was quick to recover from the fall and she got off the ground quickly too, also seeing the funny side of the situation. She was not in the original playing eleven for this final against Australia Women. She was roped into the team after Taniya Bhatia was struck on the head during the Australian innings, and had to be swapped out with a concussion sub.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was brilliant in this final with 65(43) in a high-pressure game. However, she crumbled along with the rest of the team when needed the most, giving away a game which was as good as in their hands. Ashleigh Gardner was the wrecker-in-chief with 3/16 in her 3 overs on the day.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games was a good one for the Indian contingent and they ended with 22 gold medals, and fourth on the medal’s tally, overtaking New Zealand towards the end of the series. India did particularly well in sports like Boxing, Wrestling, Weightlifting, and others. In cricket however, they weren’t able to get past the line and eventually settled with the silver medal.
