The idea of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) was that we get to see some women’s cricketing talent that we hadn’t seen before, and that was visible on the first day of the league itself. Saika Ishaque shone on the first day to pick up 4 wickets for Mumbai Indians Women against Gujarat Giants, and you can read about that here.
On the second day of WPL 2023, it was a double header and Indian international Harleen Deol was in action for Gujarat Giants against UP Warriorz. Gujarat was batting first and after losing four early wickets, Deol partnered with Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner to get them back in the game, with the chance of building a competitive total. The 17th over in particular was a great one for the Giants…
WPL 2023 – Harleen Deol hits 4, 4, 4, 4
After the wicket of Gardner, it looked like Giants would be bowled out for a paltry total, but Deol stepped up and decided to take the attack to the Warriorz bowlers. In particular, she decided to be aggressive against Devika Vaidya, the spinner who was trusted to bowl the 17th over. She began with a boundary, and followed it up with three more to give them the impetus that was needed in this 1st innings effort.
She swept the first ball of the over which was a low full-toss and followed it up with an impressive slog-sweep on the second delivery of the over. The next couple of boundaries were slashed on the off-side for a couple of more boundaries, where she just had to beat the inner circle. She was dismissed in the next over, ending a good innings for 46(32).

Deol was struggling with her strike rate prior to this 17th over and she relieved a lot of pressure in that over from Vaidya. She stepped up after Gardner got out and played some good shots to end the innings. There was a time when 160 seemed to be a tough score but Deol helped them to 169/6 which wasn’t the best but a fighting total for sure.

One could say that the acceleration from Deol came a tad bit late in this innings but let’s not forget that Giants had a horrible outing only 24 hours ago, ending with 64/9 after Mumbai Indians Women scored 200+ in the opening game of the WPL 2023 season. Plus, they lost their captain, wicket-keeper, and opening batter Beth Mooney in this game, who picked up an injury yesterday as well.
