The World Championship of Legends (WCL) is a T20 league initiated in 2024 which features some of the best retired players (legends) representing different countries across the world. Much like a World Cup for retired players representing their countries, the first season in 2024 was called EaseMyTrip World Championship of Legends for sponsorship reasons.
While other retired players’ league were franchise-based, this one allowed yesteryear cricketers to represent their countries once again. Approved by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the WCL 2024 was the inaugural edition of the competition and it took place across a couple of venues in England between 3-13 July 2024.
There were six participating teams for WCL 2024 – Australia, England, India, Pakistan, West Indies, and South Africa. From these six teams, England Champions and South Africa Champions were the two sides that failed to qualify for the semi final stage and eventually, it was a classic India vs Pakistan match-up in the WC Legends 2024 final at Birmingham.

India Championship reigned supreme in that inaugural WCL final, beating their rivals Pakistan by 5 wickets, with 5 balls to spare, chasing 157 to become the first ever WCL champions. Pakistan Champions batted first and scored 156/6 int heir 20 overs on a slightly slower wicket and while they seemed in with a chance to successfully defend this target at some stage, the Pathan brothers got together to complete the chase in the final over. And before that, Ambati Rayudu scored a brisk fifty to set them on track, winning the Man of the Match award for the same too.

It’s just been the first season of the WC Legends so far but the league has potential to overtake its competitors like Legends League Cricket (LLC), Road Safety World Series (RSWS), and others. Individually, Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik was the best batter of the tournament with 245 runs right through the first season.
With the ball, four bowlers ended up with 9 wickets each and they include Australia’s Nathan Coulter-Nile and Brett Lee, and Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz and Shoaib Malik. And while Malik was good enough to be the player of the series, that award went to India’s Yusuf Pathan for his 221 runs in 7 games and couple of match-winning knocks at an average of 55+ with the bat.
