Not many people will know this but the Women’s World Cup is actually the oldest limited overs world championship in the history of this game, even older than the men’s world cup. That’s right, we’re not kidding! The first edition of the men’s world cup took place in 1975 but a couple of years before that, the women’s world championship was played for the first time.
Initially, the tournament was administered by the International Women’s Cricket Council (IWCC) until the organisation merged with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2003. Earlier, the tournament faced financial issues and was played at a gap of 5-6 years each time, with many teams always dropping out. However, the ICC Women’s World Cup has been a quadrennial event since 2005!
So far, there’s been eleven editions of the Women’s World Cup which was later renamed to add ‘ICC’ to the name. Today, we’re going to run you through all the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup winners till date (as of 20th February 2022) before the start of the twelfth edition which is the 2022 ICC Women’s World Cup, being played between eight countries, in New Zealand. There wasn’t any fixed structure to this tournament when it happened over the first few editions. Initially, the table toppers were given the title without the need of a final, while the concept of ‘Player of the Match’ was also introduced many years later too. The continuity of the tournament was once again broken when the 2021 Women’s World Cup was postponed by a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

So while this has been going on since decades now, only three teams have actually been successful. In the last edition (2017 Women’s World Cup), India W was close to winning their first title and were all set for celebrations as well, when a complete turnaround took place in the last 15 minutes of play, giving England another title, this time at home in London too!
