In the men’s game of cricket, the Asia Cup is a very important fixture on the cricketing calendar, and it’s quite competitive as well. In the women’s game, this tournament has also been taking place since 2004, organised by the Asian Cricket Council and known as the ACC Women’s Asia Cup.
Before the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup began in Sri Lanka, there were eight successful competition held, now taking place on a biennial basis. Like the men’s tournament, the Women’s Asia Cup also began with the ODI format and then shifted completely to the T20I format ever since the 2012 Women’s Asia Cup edition in China.
India Women is the most successful side in the Women’s Asia Cup history, winning 7 of the 9 tournaments to have been hosted so far, and only missing out in 2018 and 2024, where they finished runner-up to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka Women respectively. The first Women’s Asia Cup took place in Sri Lanka and there were only two participants – India and Sri Lanka. Here, the Indian side won 5-0 and lifted the inaugural Women’s Asia Cup title. From that first edition with two teams in 2004, the tournament has come a long way to have a total of ten participating nations over the years. Now, as many as 8 teams participated in the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup, with UAE Women being the latest team to debut, in the 2022 edition, which was hosted in Bangladesh for the first time ever.

Individually, the Indian players have ruled the runs and wickets charts as well, with Mithali Raj being the top run scorer in the Women’s Asia Cup, with 588 runs to her name. On the other hand, it’s Neetu David who tops the Women’s Asia Cup wicket-takers list with 26 scalps under her belt. Both are now retired and may enjoy their respective top spots for a while.
Former Indian captain Mithali Raj happens to be the only player in the Women’s Asia Cup history to be bestowed with the Player of the Match award in two different finals, doing so in the 2005-06 edition and then many years later again in the 2016 edition, before she hung up her boots and called it quits on a very illustrious career.
