It was November 2017 that Mumbai’s Shreyas Iyer first donned the Team India jersey and since then, he’s been collecting runs in all tournaments, be it bilateral series or the Indian Premier League or anywhere else. One of the leading batters in the country right now, he’s had to wait his time to get a chance in the longest format and once again, he finds himself in a position where a Test debut seems likely.
It’s not the first time he’s made the Test squad for India but this time, he’s in a squad which is relatively weakened as Rohit Sharma wasn’t picked and Virat Kohli was dropped for the 1st Test in the 2-match series between India and New Zealand. To strengthen his case, KL Rahul yesterday was ruled out of the series with a muscle strain on his left thigh.
It’s a poor batting order now with Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill and captain Ajinkya Rahane all still fighting for their place in the team, with Cheteshwar Pujara being the only person who you can say has a cemented place in the team. However, Iyer now has further competition as Suryakumar Yadav was drafted into the squad as a replacement for KL Rahul.
Ideally, Shreyas should be the first choice and should be handed a Test debut in the 1st Test. However, Suryakumar is also a man in form and someone who has been preferred by the selectors. In fact, he even made his way into the T20 World Cup squad and Shreyas didn’t, though the latter has been a part of the Indian setup since much longer now.
He’s been biding his time but we at Read Scoops believe that it’s the right time for Shreyas to be given a Test debut. In FC cricket, he has 12 centuries in 54 games at a batting average of 52+ and even has a top score of 202*. On the other hand, Surya has 14 centuries in 77 FC games at an average of 44 and a best score of 200. Both will be fighting it out for a place in the side!
