Easily one of the biggest names in the history of Indian cricket, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been a legend in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. From inception of the cash-rich league, he was taken into Chennai Super Kings and after that, never went under the IPL hammer ever again. Apart from a couple of years where CSK faced off a suspension, Dhoni has played all his life for this franchise.
During the CSK suspension, Dhoni led Rising Pune Supergiant but his allegiance has always lied with the yellow of Chennai Super Kings. He became known as ‘Thala’ and was extremely loved by the entire country, but most specifically, fans of the Super Kings franchise. But over the last few years, the question of MS Dhoni’s IPL retirement has kept popping up.
Will MS Dhoni Play IPL 2025?
Since the last 3-4 seasons, commentators and presenters in the post-match presentations all asked Dhoni the same question – “Will this be your last year?” Mostly, he joked about it each season and confirmed that he’ll be back. However, it was in IPL 2023 when he first started admitting that his body is finding it difficult to play at this professional level, and that it might be his last season.
And every IPL 2023 venue he played at, the stadiums had a sea of yellow as fans across India showered love and affection on the former Indian captain. He was overwhelmed with gratitude and when they finally won the IPL 2023 title, he said that he’ll try to be back for IPL 2024, ONLY for the fans. And he returned, without having played a single professional game in between the two seasons.

A major sign in IPL 2024 was that he gave away the captaincy of Chennai to Ruturaj Gaikwad, indicating it’s time to move on. Some experts even believed that MSD won’t play every game of IPL 2024, citing body management and fitness. He played all the first three games that we saw at the time of writing this article and it brings us to the question, “Will he play the IPL 2025 season?”
The next mega auction in IPL 2025 will see teams only being able to keep 7-8 players back, which means Dhoni may not want to reserve one spot for himself. Now that ‘Who is the captain of CSK in IPL 2025?’ has been answered, we think that MSD will take it game by game before he starts thinking about his IPL retirement. But we believe that 95%, this will be the 42-year old’s last IPL season. Participate in our poll below and let us know what you think?

The IPL 2025 mega auction is going to be the biggest even in the tournament since the last 3 years but we’re more interested about whether Dhoni will reach the IPL Auction 2025 or not. If he does, it’s likely he will be picked up for another franchise at a massive 20+ Crore package but that then will just be for one season. However, all of this stays a massive IF!
