Why Don’t English Batsmen Bat With Caps On?

In the ongoing England vs India Test series, you may have noticed many Indian batsmen batting with caps on rather than helmets, while playing against the English spinners. However, you wouldn’t have seen a single English batsman using caps. In fact, not just in this series but it would’ve been years since you last saw an English batsman using anything else but a helmet.

Why Don't English Batsmen Bat With Caps On?

Which brings us to the answer of the question asked in the title. Why don’t we see England batsmen using caps instead of helmets? This applies to every professional cricketer in the country, whether playing for the national side or whether playing any other forms of County or professional cricket. In fact, this rule also applies to pitch-side or close-in fielders. And it’s not something that has come up recently, but was instated all the way back in November 2015, post the death of Australian batsman, Phil Hughes.

Phil Hughes passed away due to a hit to the head while batting in a Shield match in 2014. Since then, the ICC and other cricket boards have taken their own measures to ensure such freak accidents don’t happen again. Former England wicket-keeper Craig Kieswetter also took a blow to the face many years ago which cut short his professional career.

So this rule was applied very strictly on all English cricketers, to reduce the chances of such freak accidents, that could be career-defining or even fatal. For similar cricket stories from around the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
