It’s not very often that you see teenagers reach the highest peaks in cricket and for young Caoimhe Bray from Newcastle in Australia, the last few months have been a complete roller-coaster ride. Why is she trending, you wonder? A few months ago, at the age of 14 years old, she was signed by Sydney Sixers to play in the T20 Spring Challenge 2024.
While that wasn’t a very highly broadcast event, it was meant to be a stepping stone to the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024. With young Bray doing well in that tournament, she drafted into the main Sydney Sixers Women’s team and made her debut in their first game of the season, at just 15 years and a few days old.
Caoimhe Bray Sixers career
She played only the four games in the T20 Spring Challenge but that was enough to impress the team management. This includes a top score of 19* and a total of 5 wickets with the ball as well. The next thing you know, she’s playing alongside the likes of her role model, Ellyse Perry, Australia captain Alyssa Healy, Ashleigh Gardner, and many other top names.

In her WBBL debut, Bray continued to impress as she picked up the wicket of T20 World Cup winning player, Deandra Dottin. And then, she came out to hit the winning runs from a time that the Sixers needed 32 runs in 20 balls at one stage. Immediately, she became a household name for cricket fans in Australia, getting 1/15 and 12* on her WBBL debut.

Caoimhe Bray cricket stats
A few years ago, Bray was participating in junior club cricket for her Under-11 side, at the age of only 8 years. From there, she moved on to amass 955 runs in last season’s NSW Under-18 Brewer Shield, where she even scored 202(134) to take the Greater Hunter Central Coast team to the title.
From there, she got sucked into the Australia U-19 squad for a tri-series in Brisbane, where she again produced an impressive all-round display vs New Zealand, scoring 84 and then picking 4/20 with the ball. And the best part is that, like her role model, Perry, she’s also pursuing a football career simultaneously, despite signing a 3-year deal with Sixers Women.

At just 14 years of age, Bray made her international debut for the CommBank Junior Matildas at the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup in Indonesia. Last year, she was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the National Youth Championships for Girls. What a bright future this young girl has, and we hope she chooses cricket over football, if she ever has to make the choice.
There’s a bright career and lots of learning we expect to see from Bray in years to come at the WBBL. In fact, you may see her in Australian colours soon too. For similar updates from WBBL and and other cricketing events around the world, remeber to always stay tuned to ReadScoops.com.
