In Test cricket, run rates of 3-4 runs per over are quite common and when teams have to push declarations or put opponents into bat, we may even see those numbers rise to as much as 6-8 runs per over. However, we’re going to go back to one day in history when a certain Aussie man named George Bailey went on to equal a long-standing Test record for the most runs in a single over.
While he played 120 games in the shorter format for Australia, Bailey played only 5 Tests for his country between November 2013 to February 2014 but those few games were good enough to ensure he won’t be forgotten in Test cricket for a long time to come. Today, the unorthodox right handed batter turns 38 years old and to celebrate, we’re taking you back to that special day in history.
It was December 2013 when Australia were accelerating in their 2nd innings at the WACA in an important Ashes clash against England. Earlier in the session, Shane Watson hammered 3 sixes in an over against Graeme Swann to register 22 in an over only before Bailey went on to tear apart James Anderson for 28 runs in an over, who is no one but one of the best pace bowlers in the world!

“We didn’t know it was a record. There’s no doubt we’ve had quite a few bad experiences against Jimmy Anderson. To see that is always nice to have the shoe on the other foot, because he’s certainly had the upper hand on a lot of our batsmen in the Ashes series that I’ve been involved in… At certain times individuals in the Australian team have been at his mercy. It certainly provided a little bit of enjoyment for us,” said Watson after stumps that day.

Bailey hit 4, 6, 2, 4, 6, 6 to amass a total of 28 runs in that over, equalling a 10-year old record of the West Indian great, Brian Lara. It’s been 7 years (as of September 2020) since that record equalling over off the bat of George Bailey and people still haven’t forgotten that amazing moment in Test history.
