The Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) was introduced to the world in 2022 and while there were only 3 teams participating, it was welcomed with open arms by women’s cricket fans across the world. CPL has always been considered one of the biggest parties in sport, and we’re not surprised they decided to extend that party to the women cricketers as well.
WCPL 2022 was the first edition of this tournament, which saw only four matches on the fixtures list. From there, the WCPL 2023 schedule was an improvement as we moved to 7 games in the season. So far, the three participating teams in all editions of the competition are – Guyana Amazon Warriors, Trinbago Knight Riders, and Barbados Royals.
All three WCPL teams come from the same franchise as the men’s CPL teams, and that helped build popularity in the WCPL early on. The first edition saw Trinbago Knight Riders Women top the table with 1 win in 2 games, and then they went on to beat Barbados Women in the final, going down in the history books as the first CPL Women’s winners.

The next year in WCPL 2023, the previous year’s runner-up Barbados Royals Women completed a victory in the final, after first getting 3 wins in 4 games in the double round robin stage. Both national side players at some point of time, Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews were adjudged Player of the Match in the two completed WCPL finals thus far. While Barbados Royals W is the only team to make both finals, Guyana Amazon Warriors W is the only team to have not yet lifted the trophy in this competition.
In both WPCL finals so far, the team batting first went on to defend their score and take home the top honours. Could that follow suit in the WCPL 2024 final as well? It’s still early days in the competition and we think there’s a lot more to come, with plenty of milestones and records to be broken over the years as well.
