Virat Kohli completes 2,000 international runs in 2018
The Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored a brilliant century in this Guwahati ODI – 140 runs off just 107 deliveries with 21 fours and 2 sixes. This is Kohli’s 36th century in 204 innings in ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar is the only other player to score as many centuries in ODIs and he got there in 311 ODI innings.
En route to his 36th ODI century, Virat Kohli completed 2,000 international runs in the calendar year 2018. He currently has 2,098 runs in 35 innings across all the three formats and is the first player this year to breach 2,000-run mark. England’s Joe Root is second in this list with 1699 runs in 44 innings.
This is the fifth time Kohli scored over 2,000 international runs in a calendar year – 2186 runs in 2012, 2286 runs in 2014, 2595 runs in 2016, 2818 runs in 2017 and 2098* runs in 2018. He is now in level with Sachin Tendulkar who also accomplished this feat five times in his career. Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene is the only other player to achieve this feat exactly five times.
Having scored over 2,000 international runs six times, Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara is the current holder of this record. Considering the current form Virat Kohli is in, Sanga’s record will be broken very soon.
