It was Super Sunday and IPL 2023 Match 70, which is also the final game of the league stage. But the importance of the game was very high, because qualification for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore was at stake, based on the result of the RCB vs GT game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. And it did go right down to the wire, a game we all loved to bits.
RCB put up 197/5 in their 20 overs, losing at least 15-20 runs on their total because of regular wickets falling at one end. And on the other end, former captain Virat Kohli stood tall once again, scoring his second consecutive century in IPL 2023, while also becoming the leading century maker in IPL history, overtaking Chris Gayle after he got to his 7th IPL career century.
Virat Kohli sits in dismay after IPL 2023 elimination
While they got the early wicket of Wriddhiman Saha in the chase, Shubman Gill was playing the knock of his life for Gujarat at the other end. And while RCB didn’t bowl too badly, they had absolutely no answer to Gill’s brilliance. He went on to score a century himself, smashing a six over long on to get to his second consecutive IPL century as well, while also finishing the game with that maximum.
And what that loss meant that RCB was knocked out of IPL 2023 contention, finishing below Mumbai Indians on the points table, and missing out on the IPL title once again. It’s been 16 years of the competition now and RCB is yet to get a hold of that IPL trophy. And the worst part was seeing Virat Kohli sitting in the dugout in dismay, seeing that yet another IPL season has gone by without success.

Social media was ablaze with tweets and posts about Kohli’s reaction to the loss. He sat covering his face in his cap, and was steely in his stare. It took him a while before the anger calmed down and he got up to greet the opposition team on their victory. And by the time he got out to the pitch, he managed to get a smile out to congratulate Shubman Gill on his match winning knock.
Later, the RCB team took a walk around the Chinnaswamy to thank their fans for all their support right through the IPL 2023 season. Their support has been great and Kohli once again managed to bring out a smile as he walked around the ground with his captain Faf du Plessis and the rest of the team. Unfortunately, his 101* was in vain in today’s game, which is not usual for someone like Kohli.
Most painful picture of the IPL.
