The entire cricketing fraternity was active on social media this morning as news came in about the death of former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds. From his teammates to players he’s played against to people he’s even had fights an controversies with, everyone was shocked and saddened by his untimely death.
The Queensland all-rounder was only 46 years old when we got news of a tragic car accident on Saturday night. He had a prolific career for Queensland as well as for his country, playing for the Aussies between 1998-2009 and eventually putting an end to his cricketing career in 2012. A number of players sent out tribute messages this morning.
Virat Kohli’s tweet on Andrew Symonds death
One of them was former India captain Virat Kohli who may have not played against Symonds a lot as Virat was still beginning his international career at the time. However, he knows the importance and contribution that the all-rounder made to Australian Cricket and he was equally saddened about his sudden passing.
The batting maestro took to Twitter to share his grief with his 48 million followers. “Shocking and saddening to hear of Andrew Symonds passing. May his soul RIP and God give strength to his family in this difficult moment. 🙏🏻” said Kohli’s tweet on this unfortunate demise. Millions of fans across the world will share the same sentiments as Kohli today.

It’s clearly a tough time for Australian cricket as they lost Rodney Marsh and Shane Warne, two legends of the game, in March this year. Even Warne’s death was an untimely one as he passed away of a heart attack in Thailand. Several cricketers from around the world shared their grief on social media.
Among them were many Indian cricketers who have played with Symonds in the past including VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh, Kohli and others. His Australian teammates were also quick to share tributes and one of them came from Symonds’ national team captain Ricky Ponting who shared a heart-warming note on his teammate and friend, which you can read here.
Talking about the incident itself, Symonds met with a car accident at around 11pm on Saturday night and while a rescue team tried to revive him, they were unsuccessful. Reports later came out and was confirmed that Symonds was the only occupant of the car and he passed after after succumbing to injuries from the accident.
