The Indian domestic cricket setup is a very robust one and there are multiple tournaments scheduled on the annual calendar to help scout and grow local talent. One such tournament hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the Vijay Hazare Trophy (today known as the IDFC First Bank Vijay Hazare Trophy for sponsorship reasons), which is a limited-overs cricket domestic competition.
Also known as the Ranji One-Day Trophy, the List A competition was first initiated in 1993/94 which was played in an inter-zonal format. Teams played among themselves and each zone had a winner, with no overall winner being announced. This changed in 2002/03 from when the inter-state competition followed a round robin plus knockout format. On this page, we’ve put down a complete Vijay Hazare Trophy winners list.
When the Vijay Hazare Trophy first took place, it was played in five different zones of 5-6 teams each – North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone, and Central Zone. They played among themselves and the team leading the points table in each zone went on to win that particular zone, in a league stage and without the need to play a final to decide an overall VHT tournament winner.

The five zones still exist and currently, 28 state/regional teams are split among these groups. They play every other team in their group once each before the zone winners qualify to the quarter final stage while four runner-ups play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy preliminary quarter-finals. While there was no official winner in the first season in 1993/94, the records were maintained and it was Karnataka’s Rahul Dravid who ended as the tournament’s top scorer that season, while Haryana’s Dhanraj Singh ended as the top wicket-taker. Dravid went on to make his international debut a couple of years later and that shows how important the VHT competition is in the domestic setup in India.

The 2002/03 and 2003/04 editions of the tournament had no final per se as a round robin stage was held separately for the zonal winners. It was only in the 2004/05 edition when the playoffs were introduced to the VHT competition, and that first edition saw the final being tied and the title being shared by Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, something which hasn’t ever happened again since then.
A specific ‘Man of the Match’ award hasn’t always been given away in a Vijay Hazare Trophy final but whenever it has, there are some players who have shown they can stand up in big matches, more than others. One of them is Mumbai’s Aditya Tare who bagged two MOM Awards in two successive title winning finals at VHT 2018/19 and VHT 2020/21 as well.

Similarly, Mayank Agarwal has also done the same twice for Karnataka, with 125(100) against Punjab in the 2014/15 final while also putting up a match-winning 90(79) in the 2017/18 final against Saurashtra. Abhimanyu Mithun has also been a big-game player for Karnataka, taking a 4-fer in one final and a 5-fer in another in final, both in winning efforts.

When it comes to the most successful teams in the Vijay Hazare Trophy history, Tamil Nadu is the leading side with as many as five (5) titles to their name over the years. Two other teams have won the VHT title four time (4) each and that’s Mumbai and Karnataka. As for the most runner-up finishes, we have Bengal who has only one title but they’ve finished as runner-up five times over the years!
