Over 2023 and 2024, several states and union territories in India launched their own T20 franchise leagues. One of them that got approval for a new league was the state of Uttarakhand, with the Uttarakhand Premier League (UPL) being inception in June 2024, organised by the Cricket Association of Uttarakhand and sanctioned by the BCCI.
The first edition of the UPL T20 competition was announced and began on 15th Sep 2024, running for eight days and having a total of 12 matches on the fixtures list, including the playoffs and the final. The idea was to expose players from Uttarakhand to more high-profile competitions, and bring their local talent into the limelight.
The first edition of the tournament was called Patanjali Uttarakhand Premier League 2024 for sponsorship reasons, with a total of 5 competing teams, each of them having their region in the team’s name – Udham Singh Nagar Indians, Pithoragarh Hurricane, Nainital SG Pipers, Haridwar Spring Elmas, and Dehradun Warriors.

It also became only the third franchise tournament in the country to launch a women’s competition, after the Bengal Pro T20 and the Delhi Premier League. The tournament follows a round-robin and playoffs format for the UPL 2024 season, with a few players being IPL cricketers as well. From the current UPL 2024 squads, Aditya Tare, Dikshanshu Negi, and Akash Madhwal are the well-known players who are in action in the first season in Uttarakhand.
