USA Smash 33-Run Over at 2024 T20 World Cup!

Today, 2nd June 2024, marked the opening day of the landmark 2024 T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies. Bringing cricket to America has been a plan for many years now and the host nation got a chance to play on the opening night in Dallas. And the USA vs Canada opening game turned out to be a super exciting one too!

Batting first, Canada scored 194 and it was looking like a steep chase for the home side. However, after losing 2 early wickets, Andries Gous and Aaron Jones combined to start smashing the ball to every corner of the ground at the Grand Prairie Stadium. Suddenly, the game changed from being a touch chase to looking all one-sided for USA.

33-run for for USA at T20 World Cup 2024

The two batsmen had found their groove and after 13 overs, they needed 69 runs off the final 7 overs, at a little less than 10 runs per over required. Jeremy Gordon was the designated bowler for the 14th over and he had a good outing before this over, going for only 11 runs in his first 2 overs. However, the worst was yet to come for Gordon.

Gordon was hit by both batsmen for boundaries in this over, and bowling 3 wides to go with 2 no-balls didn’t help his case either. Jones hit one six while Gous hit two fours and sizes each, to produce a magical over of 33 runs to end the 14th over of the game, one that turned the match completely in USA’s favour.

We knew that the Canadian bowling was weak and defending 195 wasn’t going to be easy. However, the wheels completely came off in the chase and suddenly, USA found themselves at 181/3 in 17 overs, needing only 5 runs per over required in the final three overs. Here’s how that over read from Gordon – Wd 6 4 Wd N N1 6 Wd 1 6 4.

They scored a 131-run partnership for the third wicket, eventually chasing down the total in 17.4 overs and not only winning on their T20 World Cup, but getting themselves a good Net Run Rate to begin the competition. Absolute fireworks in Dallas and it sets the tone for what’s to come in games to come.

Jones ended with 94* and bagged the Man of the Match award for taking his side home in their first game of this ICC event. As for Gordon, his 33-run over is the second-most expensive over in T20 World Cup history, only behind Stuart Broad’s 36-run over in 2007.
