It’s been a tough few months and couple of years for Mumbai’s Prithvi Shaw, who was touted to be the next big thing in Indian cricket when he appeared on the scene. However, a series of national side and IPL failures pushed him into the shadows. And currently, he’s a man on a mission to make a statement and possibly a comeback too!
Battling fitness issues and social media criticism wouldn’t have been easy for Shaw, with the 23-year old only managing a single fifty in his last 4 Ranji Trophy games (8 innings) as well. However, he decided to turn things around for himself in this current round game in the ongoing 2022/23 Ranji Trophy – Mumbai vs Assam.
Prithvi Shaw scores record 379 in Ranji Trophy
Mumbai batted first and they ended Day 1 at 397/2 where Shaw already managed an individual double hundred, batting unbeaten on 240* at the end of the day. His captain Ajinkya Rahane was alongside him when he registered the double ton in just 235 balls. ‘Journalling, revisiting old batting videos, and shutting out the world’ are things he did in order to get back among the runs, he said in an interview.
Prithvi Shaw 379, highest score by an Indian opener in First Class cricket. Time to acknowledge the fact that he will be a lot more damaging in T20 format. #CricketTwitter #SportsYaari

If selectors continue to ignore Prithvi Shaw despite his strong domestic performances, its entirely India's loss. Not his. He may soon pack his bags and go play abroad and will be lapped up in franchise cricket world over!

But his job wasn’t over as he had the chance to go on and get a really big, big score on Day 2 as well, given how quickly he was scoring his runs. And it was only within the first session of the second day that Rahane got another Ranji Trophy century and Shaw brought up a maiden career triple century. The batter who scored a century on Test debut channelled everything into this innings and accelerated his scoring rate on Day 2 as well.

He got to the triple century milestone in just 326 balls and it didn’t take him quite too long to go on to get 350 as well. Playing against an average Assam bowling attack in Guwahati, Shaw realised it’s his chance to play a career-defining knock with the super experienced Rahane there to mentor him from the other end.
Prithvi Shaw had long rope in International Cricket. truth is he could not perform against international quality bowling, lets see how he fares in #IPL before bringing back.

Prithvi Shaw is trapped leg before by Riyan Parag. The long innings comes to an end, as he falls a bit short of the coveted 400.
And it's lunch. #RanjiTrophy@sportstarweb

Eventually he was dismissed by his peer in the IPL, Riyan Parag, ending a marathon knock and one that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. He scored the second highest score by an Indian in FC cricket, overtaking Sanjay Manjrekar’s 377 for Bombay vs Hyderabad. He scored 379(383) and finished only behind BB Nimbalkar’s 443*. We at Read Scoops even thought that record was going to be surpassed:

A lot of opinions appeared on Twitter, some saying that he should be drafted straight into the national side while many other saying that he has to continue to be among the runs and score more and in the IPL as well, in order to be given another chance. Either way, it was a great knock and he’d be disappointed to be out just 21 runs short of a 400+ score!
