Earlier, cricketers used to not take the approach of retiring from any one of the three formats of the game. It was all-in or nothing. Nowadays, however, with a heavy workload and several T20 franchise leagues to be played apart from international cricket, it tends to become quite a difficult task for them to manage the physicality aspect, while also trying to balance it out with some time spent with their families.
Over the last few months, many notable cricketers have been stepping down from just one or two formats of the game, after Ben Stokes decided to make the bold move of retiring from ODIs. Recently, Mushfiqur Rahim from Bangladesh also decided to step away from the T20I format. Now, former Aussie captain and opening batsman Aaron Finch has joined them in retiring from the ODI format only.
Aaron Finch retirement from ODI format
He had already given an indication that he’s going to make an announcement on his ODI career about 24 hours ago, in between the ongoing 2022 New Zealand tour of Australia. The 35-year old will continue to lead Australia in the T20I format and even though it’s about the right age to retire, Finchy actually has some great numbers in the 50-over format as well. Social media users had a few comments on the same:
#asksportstak @vikrantgupta73 would any Indian cricketer retire just before the odi world cup ..#AaronFinch this shows how non Asian players mentality is… If runs don't come.. Don't drag ur career… Should Dhawan play next year??

This includes 145 ODI caps and 5,400+ runs which includes 17 centuries, 30 fifties, and a massive top score of 153* as well. One can safely assume that it was his recent form in this format that led him to making this decision, as he struggled to get into double digits in recent ODIs, with his last ODI fifty coming eight innings ago in Sri Lanka.

Since then, he’s played ODIs against Zimbabwe at home, as well as New Zealand in the ongoing tour. He has got only one double digit score of 15 in 7 ODIs since his last fifty at Pallekele, and has got three ducks too. 0, 5, 5, 1 are his last four ODI scores and Finch may have had reason to believe that his time in this format is now done and dusted. The 3rd ODI against New Zealand on Sunday, 11 Sep 2022 will be his final game in this format and everyone will be hoping he can sign off on a good note. “It has been a fantastic ride with some incredible memories. I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of some brilliant one-day sides. Equally, I have been blessed by all those I have played with and the many people behind the scenes,” said Finch in a statement.
People will long talk about the job Tim Paine and Justin Langer did to restore the reputation of Australian cricket post-Cape Town but Aaron Finch was every bit as significant. Such a dignified leader, terrific statesman for the game and outstanding white-ball player at his pomp.

#AaronFinch announces his retirement from #ODI ! After #stokes now another player announces retirement in this format but continues in t20! That probably brings the inevitable question! Will #ODI survive going forward considering the t20 leagues blooming across? #CricketTwitter
