So far, a number of well-known footballers have been tested positive for novel coronavirus across the world, but we have news of the first known cricketer to have tested positive for the same. Earlier today, reports from a very reliable source confirmed that former Pakistani opening batsman Taufeeq Umar tested positive for the illness.
Having last played an international game for his country back in 2014, the stylish left-hander was an integral part of the Pakistan national side during the early 2000’s and managed to score 7 centuries in 44 Tests as well. Now, reports have come in of his illness and that he is under self-isolation at his home right now.
With over 10,000 runs in his First Class career, Umar could never really prove his talent on the global stage, with just 3 fifties in 22 ODIs for Pakistan. While the intricate details of him being tested positive for COVID-19 haven’t been released, it’s said that he will be doing a mandatory 14-day quarantine at home now.

South Africa’s Solo Nqweni tested positive, former Pakistan first-class cricketer Zafar Sarfaraz passed away after losing his battle to the virus, and Scottish player Majid Haq also confirmed he contracted the disease, making Umar the fourth name in the cricketing community to be diagnosed for the same. It’s not a complete surprise as Pakistan has 50,000+ confirmed cases of the disease.
