11,867 Test runs is what Shivnarine Chanderpaul got in his Test career which spanned 164 Tests between 1994-2015. He’s the second highest Test run scorer for West Indies only behind Brian Charles Lara. Looking at these stats, we’re sure there’s plenty of pressure on his son Tagenarine Chanderpaul who recently made his Test debut as well.
The 26-year old has an uncanny resemblance to his father and he was praised by many former Test cricketers when he made his debut late last year, playing two Tests against Australia. He didn’t get the biggest scores to his name but he got a fifty and ended the series with 160 runs in 2 games, with a batting average of 40. His next assignment was the 2023 West Indies tour of Zimbabwe, where he went one step further.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul – maiden Test century
Windies batted first and a lot lot of the first two days were washed out due to rain. And while the game was clearly heading towards a draw, the Windies openers decided to put a price to their wickets and keep grinding it out. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite scored his 12th Test century and then, his younger partner was setting himself up for the magical 3-figure accomplishment as well.
He showed a lot of calm and composure like we’ve seen his father do for years before him. Even when he got into the nineties, he didn’t rush it on. He finally got there in the 88th over of the 1st innings, sneaking a single on the last ball of the over. And he managed to get there right in time because the next over was the last over of the day’s play.

West Indies Cricket has been having a tough time for nearly a decade now and this will definitely brighten up the day of many thousands of fans. His father will also be very proud, consider Tagenarine got to his first century after having only one prior 50+ score while Shivnarine himself had thirteen 50+ scores before he got his maiden Test century. Their opening stand of 221* right now is the 64th highest in the history of Test cricket and when they resume tomorrow on Day 3 of the 1st Test, they’ll want to push on. The game is anyway heading towards a draw and it’s a chance for Chanderpaul to make his first century a very big one. The same can be said for the captain Brathwaite, who could target a second career double century in this match too.
