The T20 World Cup is the biggest stage in the 20-over format in international cricket. Those who do well here write their name down in the history of the sport. And while we’re always talking about the batsmen, we should make a note of those bowlers who have been destructive on their day in this competition’s history.
While batsmen are more flashy and gain all the limelight, the bowlers are often the match-winners in T20 cricket. Here on this page, we’re going to explore each time a 5-wicket haul has been taken by a bowler in the ICC T20 World Cup, right from inception in 2007 to the most recent edition in 2024, hosted in USA and West Indies.
Which bowlers have taken 5 wickets in the T20 World Cup?
The first person to get a 5-fer in the T20 World Cup was Pakistan’s Umar Gul way back in the 2009 edition of the tournament. His 5/6 was a record performance and since then, we’ve registered a total of eleven 5-wicket hauls in the T20 World Cup, which includes one 6-fer in the name of Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner, Ajantha Mendis.

These T20 World Cup all 5-fers list has performances across different conditions and against varying skill levels of oppositions. Most of the bowlers on this list are pacers but there have been many spinners who have achieved 5-fers as well. Mendis’ 6/8 remains the best bowling figures in the T20 World Cup, achieved back in 2012 in Hambantota.

The most economical of these spells was one by Rangana Herat who went at a paltry 0.85 runs per over, bagging 5/3 in 3.3 overs, including 2 maidens. The most recent one came in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Afghanistan vs Uganda game where Fazalhaq Farooqi bagged 2 wickets off consecutive balls in two different overs. See more here:

One the other hand, the most expensive 5-fer was that from Lasith Malinga who gave away 31 runs in his 4 overs, at an economy rate of 7.75 runs per over.
