T20 World Cup 2024: SEE West Indies 36-Run Over

The T20 World Cup 2024 saw some ridiculous records in low-scoring games, like the lowest team total, the lowest totals defended, slowest fifties by batters, most balls taken to get off the mark, and much more. However, West Indies had other ideas when they took on Afghanistan in the last group stages game of the tournament, before the Super Eights began.

They were batting first in St Lucia as all the records started to tumble with big hitting. They may have lost Brandon King early, but it was all carnage to follow from the willows of Nicholas Pooran and Johnson Charles. In fact, the duo smashed a record 36-run over in just the fourth over of the game, against the bowling of Azmatullah Omarzai.

Azmatullah Omarzai concedes 36-run over

Omarzai got the wicket of King but he entered the record books for all the wrong reasons after that. He got hit for only 3 sixes in the over, but still conceded 36 runs because of as many as 11 extras in the over.

Yuvraj Singh (IND) vs Stuart Broad (ENG) in 2007 was the first time we saw a 36-run over in T20I cricket, followed by Kieron Pollard (WI) vs Akila Dananjaya (SL) in 2021. Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh (IND) combined to hit 36 runs against Karim Janat (AFG) in 2024, while Dipendra Singh Airee (NEP) vs Kamran Khan (QAT) in 2024 also had the same result.

West Indies brought up 50 in just 3.3 overs and then also ended up with the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history, after getting to 92/1 in their 6 overs. 6 N4 Wd5 0 L4 4 6 6 was what the over read, and Omarzai’s 36-run over will go down in the history books, mostly because of all the extras he conceded. Afghanistan has been the team to watch out for in the 2024 T20 World Cup so far, but the hosts have clearly shown them who’s boss in this game so far. Before this, Afghanistan hadn’t conceded 100 runs in three games but here, they conceded 100 runs within 8 overs against the Windies; a reality check, is what they received earlier this morning.

Azmat covered up in the field later, to get a direct hit from the boundary, which resulted in the crucial wicket of Pooran for 98. However, it wasn’t enough as West Indies got 218 and won by a margin of 100+ runs eventually.
