When Glenn Phillips came out to bat today against Sri Lanka in the 2022 T20 World Cup, not many would’ve expected New Zealand to get many on the board. They were struggling at 15/3 in 5 overs and when most would’ve expected a little bit of consolidation, Phillips decided to pull out some of his best shots, starting a fantastic counter-attacking knock.
New Zealand began their campaign in the T20 WC with an upset win against Australia and Phillips ensured he gives his side a chance to win their next game as well, getting to a magical century in today’s Super 12 game. The wicket-keeper batsman sped through the innings and was especially quick after getting to a fifty, trying to power almost every ball over the boundary ropes.

Just one game was on the 2022 T20 World Cup schedule for 29th October 2022 and the crowd at Sydney was in for a treat as Phillips entertained everyone in the stands, regardless of whether they were Kiwi or Sri Lankan fans. He seemed to hit everything in the middle of the bat and even the ones he didn’t middle were going across the boundary ropes; such is the 25-year old’s hitting ability.
He took them out of a position of real worry and his knock included 10 fours and 4 big sixes too. He brought up his century in the 19th over and let out a loud roar when he hit that last boundary to bring up three figures. It was his first entry into the T20 World Cup centuries list while being his second T20I century, missing his career best of 108 by a few runs.

He finally miscued one and was caught within the 30-yard circle in the final over, being dismissed for 104(64) which helped propel NZ to 167/7 in their 20 overs. To be honest, they looked like they were not going to get anywhere close to such a target in the first 10 overs of the innings. Daryl Mitchell played a handy second-fiddle knock to Phillips, before being dismissed in his twenties.
Phillips has been having a great 2022 T20 World Cup so far, taking a stunning outfield catch earlier in the competition as well. As for Sri Lanka, they won’t be very happy as they leaked 20-30 runs extra because of this acceleration from Phillips at the end. To make matters worse, they dropped Phillips early in his innings, and they definitely had to pay for that fielding error.

He joins Brendon McCullum as the second Kiwi batsman to get a century in a T20 World Cup game, and joins Rilee Rossouw in the list of those to get centuries in this particular 2022 edition of the competition.
