If you want your entry into the Indian Premier League (IPL), there’s one domestic tournament where you have to shine and that’s the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. India’s leading domestic T20 circuit league, the top regional teams participate in this tournament once a year, ever since inception of this regional cricketing event back in the 2006/07 season.
Since then, the T20 format has grown leaps and bounds and it’s become an integral part of the Indian domestic cricket calendar. A total of 38 teams participate in the event as of now, divided into five Elite groups of 6 teams each and one Plate group of 8 teams. The first ever Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy took place in 2006/07 and this was taken down by Tamil Nadu after beating Punjab in the final. Many years later, Tamil Nadu showed their prowess again, winning twice in 2020/21 and 2021/22, making them the most successful team in SMAT history with 3 titles, while Mumbai was the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 winners, coming into 2023 as defending champions.

Tamil Nadu also made the final of the 2019/20 season, making it three consecutive finals for them in this tournament. However, they weren’t the first to get to multiple titles in the SMAT history, with Baroda, Gujarat, and Karnataka getting there before them. All three of these teams have won two titles each over the years at the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament.

*Note: The 2016/17 edition of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was the only one till date played in a round robin format between 5 zones, and East Zone ended up becoming champion, after topping the table with 16 points from 4 wins in their 4 games. Harpreet Singh Bhatia was the top scorer of the tournament with 211 runs and Karn Sharma was the top bowler with 6 wickets, both representing Central Zone.
Among the individual performers in the history of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, you’ll see that almost all of those who were awarded Man of the Match in an SMAT final have gone on to play for India at some point of time. The highest run scorer in SMAT history is Kedar Devdhar with 2,215 runs while the top bowler in the competition is leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, getting 85 wickets to his name.
