Here’s a T20 competition that started way before its more popular peers like the Big Bash League or the Indian Premier League. We’re talking about New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition that grew from being just an inter-state T20 tournament to having some of the biggest franchise players from across the world playing in their teams at one point of time.
Earlier called the New Zealand T20 Competition (2005/06), then State Twenty20 (2006/07 to 2008/09), followed by the HRV Cup (2009/10 to 2012/13), then HRV Twenty20 (2013/14), the league finally established its current name which is the Super Smash. New Zealand’s leading T20 franchise league, Super Smash T20 takes place every year, with both men’s and women’s competitions taking place simultaneously.
Since the start of the New Zealand T20 domestic competition in the 2005/06 season, there have been 6 teams involved – 4 based in the North Island and 2 based in the South Island. Currently called the Dream11 Super Smash for sponsorship reason, all participating teams have won this tournament at least once each over the years and seasons.

Today, Auckland Aces, Wellington Firebirds, and Northern Brave are the join most successful teams in the history of this tournament, all having won the event four (4) times each.
It’s fair to say that Auckland is also the most consistent team in this tournament, making the Super Smash finals on eight (8) occasions, ending up on the losing side in four finals. There’s no player of the match award in the New Zealand T20 competition so in the final column of the table above, we’ve mentioned which player(s) had the biggest contribution in the final of every Super Smash T20 men’s edition.

Performing in these finals is a big deal and doing so on multiple occasions shows how vital some players are to their respective franchises. One such player was Devon Conway who ended up being the top scorer in two consecutive Super Smash finals in 2019/20 and 2020/21, helping Wellington Firebirds get across the line in both finals.
One of the best all-round performances in a Super Smash final will always be that of Mitchell Santner who scored 92* with the bat and then backed it up with a 3-fer with the ball too, in the Super Smash 2021/22 final for Northern Brave against Canterbury Kings.
