Sri Lanka Are Hong Kong Sixes 2024 Winners!

The Hong Kong International Sixes returned after a 7-year hiatus and the wait turned out to be super worth it. India lost all of their matches in the tournament, while the rest of the Asian sides had a great tournament, which ended with a Pakistan vs Sri Lanka final at the Kowloon Cricket Ground in Hong Kong.

The game began with Pakistan batting in the Hong Kong Sixes 2024 Cup Final, and they lost early wickets. The crowd was buzzing and Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals, after Oman won the Bowl Final and South Africa won the Plate Final earlier in the day. Dhananjaya Lakshan began with a bang, picking 2 wickets in the first over and giving away only 6 runs off it.

From there, the procession of wickets continued and Pakistan were quickly down to their ‘Last Man Standing‘ where Muhammad Akhlaq had a lot of work to do towards the backend of their 6 overs quota. Tharindu Rathnayake also picked up 2 wickets in a single over and eventually, Akhlaq was also dismissed for 48(20), meaning Pakistan all out with 4 balls to spare.

They put up 72/6 and that’s usually never enough in a Hong Kong Sixes game, especially in a final. Pakistan would’ve been happy with their first over where they gave away only 5 runs and were on track, but Aamer Yamin gave away 24 runs in the second over of the chase, courtesy 3 sixes and a boundary from the bat of Sandun Weerakkody.

Prior to this, Pakistan had won 5 Hong Kong Sixes titles while Sri Lanka only one. But past laurels never count on a final, and that’s what Sri Lanka showed their opponents on the day. Here, Weerakkody top scored with 34(13) including 4 sixes and a four, while the tournament’s top wicket-taker Tharindu Rathnayake hit the winning runs for Sri Lanka.

They won with a complete over to spare, and that’s absolute domination in this format of the game. Pakistan played a brilliant tournament but it was the men in blue who claimed their second Hong Kong Sixes title, after winning the first one in 2007. They deserved this trophy, ending a wonderful 3-day campaign in Hong Kong.

We’re not sure when the next edition will be announced, but everyone is surely excited about the same. For more updates from the Hong Kong International Sixes and other cricketing events around the world, remember to always stay tuned to ReadScoops.com.
