Shreyas Iyer on Rishabh Pant Leading DC in IPL 2021

Each year, we see a lot of updates coming in in the build up towards a new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sometimes, players get injured while some drop out for personal reasons but it’s the worst when the captain of any of the IPL franchises has to drop out and that’s exactly what happened to Delhi Capitals prior to the IPL 2021 season in India.

Being led by Shreyas Iyer over the last couple of years in the IPL, Delhi Capitals has reached new heights. Fearless cricket by young blood in this team has made them a force to reckon with but unfortunately, a shoulder injury during England’s tour of India 2021 had ruled Shreyas Iyer out for the next 2 months at least, which includes the entire schedule of IPL 2021.

With the captain itself out of action, a lot of speculation began for the next day or so as to who will lead the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2021. To be honest, it wasn’t too long before we had out answer and Rishabh Pant was appointed as the stand-in captain for the upcoming season. However, the Delhi team management believes this was the right call even though they have more experienced names like Shikhar Dhawan in the squad. They didn’t shy off to appoint a young captain in Iyer and they haven’t shied off here either, appointing the 23-year old wicket-keeper batsman to lead the side in Iyer’s absence. Shreyas himself had something to say about Pant being selected as captain…

“When I sustained the shoulder injury, and Delhi Capitals needed a leader for this edition of the IPL, I had no doubt that Rishabh (Pant) would be the best man for the job. He has all my good wishes to make amazing things happen with our absolutely incredible team. I’m going to miss the team tremendously, and will be cheering for them throughout,” said Iyer about Pant’s selection as captain.

Pant has been having a great time in international cricket of late, scoring runs at a brisk pace in Australia and then also in the home series against England.
