Despite not featuring in any of the ODI games against South Africa, Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon is hopeful of making it to their World Cup squad next year. He played two ODIs this year (against England in June) and those are the only ODI games in which he was featured for Australia since September 2016.
Having made his ODI debut in the year 2012, Lyon played just 15 ODIs in which he picked up 18 wickets. On a lighter note, 11 of those wickets were picked up against Zimbabwe and West Indies in just four games! When he was asked if he is hopeful of featuring in Australia’s squad for the World Cup next year in 2019, Nathan Lyon replied “Definitely!”
Lyon has also clarified that his exclusion from the ongoing limited overs matches was because of the upcoming important Test series against India and Sri Lanka. The 4-match Test series between Australia and India will be played from December 06 while the 2-match Test series between Australia and Sri Lanka will start from January 24 next year.
“I had a really good chat to the selectors about the ODI stuff and the T20 stuff as well. I know where I sit with the white-ball cricket and I had a big focus on this Test series, we know how big it is playing against the best guys in the world and the best side in the world. I’m just making sure that we’re ready to go come Test cricket, and I’m getting enough overs under my belt,” said Lyon.
Australia have tested their spinners Ashton Agar (4 wickets in 5 ODIs in 2018) and Adam Zampa (2 wickets in 6 ODIs in 2018) this year in their ODI line up but to their dismay, none of them have got it right. Even when Australia went out with an all-seam attack, part-timers Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head rolled their arms to get some spin overs, but with very minimal impact.
Australia now have less than 7 months to get their line-up right and safe to say the clock is ticking and it is ticking very fast! Should Australia pick Nathan Lyon for the ODI World Cup 2019 in England? Do let you know your thoughts using the comments section below.
