When you look at the series being the 2022 England tour of Netherlands, you know that it’s going to be a one-sided affair. Even though England’s playing a Test team at home against New Zealand, they have some of the best white-ball players in the world who were all in the squad to Netherlands as well.
Three ODIs were schedule in this series between 17-22 June 2022 and all of them were completely dominated by the visitors. In fact, the 1st ODI went on to become a record-breaking one as England scored 498 which became the highest total in men’s ODI history. However, there was a silver lining and a lot of positives to take home for the hosts as well.
Scott Edwards hits three straight ODI fifties
Wicket-keeper batsman Scott Edwards in particular had a great series even though the hosts ended up losing 0-3. Firstly, he was appointed stand-in captain when former captain Pieter Seelaar missed the 2nd ODI due to injury. Then, Seelaar went on to announce an immediate retirement from international cricket, which promoted Edwards to the role of permanent captain.
And he thoroughly deserved it as the Australian-Dutch batter has been in great form. Prior to this series, Netherlands played three ODIs against West Indies where he got starts in all games and even got a top score of 68. Here against England, he built on that form and made sure he capitalised on the starts in all those games.

He went on to get three successive fifties in this Netherlands vs England series, scoring 72*, 78 and 64 in the 3-match ODI series, while most of the other batters around him were collapsing against a good English bowling attack. The home team may end the series dejected with the whitewash, but Edwards walks away a happy man for sure.
Looking at his career stats so far, the 25-year-old has managed eight fifties in 22 ODIs at an average of nearly 40 for the men in orange. He’s still looking to make it count in the shortest format though, with no fifties so far and a best score of only 42* in a total of 36 T20 internationals at the highest level.
With Netherlands expected to a lot more exposure in the months to come with the chance of playing a few Test playing nations, Edwards will be super excited to keep up the run scoring, along with the added responsibility of being captain of the side. Who knows, he may thrive with the responsibility and take this team to new highs?!
After his knock in the 3rd ODI, the Dutch bowlers let him down and allowed England to chase the target of 245 in just 30.1 overs, with Jos Buttler getting 86* and winning the Man of the Series award. Opener Jason Roy also got into the act here with 101(86)*, completing his century and ensuring he was out there to take them across the line as well.
