Online sports betting companies have been expanding majorly in the last couple of years, moving into the physical and offline space as well. This has been happening in the form of franchise team and tournament sponsorships, whether that’s cricket, football, hockey, kabaddi, or any other another mainstream sporting event.
The cricketing space isn’t too far behind either as franchise leagues across the world are signing on betting brands as their principal sponsors and partners. The same has happened now with Mukesh Ambani’s new franchise team called MI Cape Town which will be a sister team of IPL’s very own Mumbai Indians team. They’ve signed Parimatch as their principal sponsor and you can keep reading for all details…
Parimatch becomes MI Cape Town’s principal sponsor
The partnership will see the sports betting giant Parimatch.com expand their sponsorship portfolio, signing on as MI Cape Town’s principal sponsor. As per the deal, Parimatch will be seen on the front jersey of the MI Cape Town team, which is owned by one of the richest people in the world – Reliance Industries’ owner, Mukesh Ambani.
The idea of expanding the MI portfolio came with the onset of two new leagues – MI Cape Town in South Africa’s SA20 League and MI Emirates in UAE’s International League T20, both of which will be kicked off in January 2023. Parimatch.com is a Ukranian sports betting website which has its presence in several countries, offering sports betting and online casino games to users.
MI Cape Town is one of 6 teams playing in the inaugural edition of the SA20 League, with all the other five teams also having Indian team owners. The league is expected to have millions of Indian viewers and that’s why questions are being asked about this partnership with the Parimatch website, considering betting has certain restrictions and regulatory issues in India.
Advertising of sports betting companies in India is restricted but this is going to be a workaround for these betting brands. While SA20 is a South African league, they will have massive viewership from India and with the teams being affiliated with Indian team Mumbai Indians, we’re likely to see Rashid Khan (MI Cape Town captain) in several ad campaigns with Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma.

Viacom18 will be the television partner for SA20 League and they will most likely have to disregard government rules because showcasing betting ads and companies in India is not allowed. Interestingly, Viacom18 like MI Cape Town is also owned by Reliance Industries itself. The SA20 league itself has a leading sports betting brand as the title sponsor in Betway.
