Everyone remembers Ruvindu Gunasekera as the young 16-year old boy who made his debut for Canada way back in 2008. Ever since, he has been a regular part of the Canadian national team, but being born in Sri Lanka, the player is still very much eligible to one day get selected to the Sri Lankan national side.
Currently, he is in Sri Lanka to better his case for selection and he announced himself brilliantly very recently. The country’s first-class Premier League Tournament is underway and Gunasekera was selected to play his first game of the season for his franchise, Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club.
In a 3-day game spanning 21-23 December, the team batted first against Ragama Cricket Club and Gunasekera decided to make a lasting impression on his season debut itself. The top order batsman walked out to the center when his team was in trouble at 43/2, only to stitch a massive 202-run stand for the 3rd wicket with Ramesh Nimantha.
Both batsmen registered fine centuries, with Gunasekera scoring 105(169) in a classy innings that included 11 fours and 2 sixes. Gunasekera has surely caught the eyes of some of the national team selectors and he’ll be looking to keep up this run scoring as the season goes on. Nimantha scored 120(237).
Read Scoops caught up with the player to know how he felt after his scoring his second first-class century. He said, “I’m happy to spend some time in the middle against a quality opposition with two of the better spinners in Sri Lanka (Amila Aponso, Nishan Peiris). Hoping to get the first win for my team in this year’s competition. Individually, hoping to keep improving and be consistent.”
Eventually, Gunasekera played another good knock of 30(62) in the 2nd innings and the match was drawn. However, Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club won the 1st innings which gave them some important points. With some more consistent performances from Gunasekera and others in the team, maybe they could secure some wins in the games to come.
