Ruturaj Gaikwad Shoves Groundsman?!

Fame and money can sometimes get to your head and that’s why we think it’s super important to stay grounded, no matter what you’ve done and where you’ve reached in life. In a recent incident during the 5th T20I between India and South Africa, a leading Indian batsman has come into the limelight for the wrong reasons, and social media has tagged him as ‘disrespectful’.

We’re talking about Ruturaj Gaikwad who was picked to open the batting for India during the 5-match T20I series on the 2022 South Africa tour of India. While there were many questions about his performances during the bilateral series, the final game raised a lot of questions on his character itself, as he was seen shoving a local groundsman out of his way.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Shoves Groundsman?!

Ruturaj Gaikwad seen pushing groundsman

The 25-year old batsman who represents Chennai Super Kings in the IPL has recently been given a few chances at the national side, and he should’ve made it count. However, he’s managed to get himself into controversy as there are videos of him pushing a groundsman out of the dugout, as the latter tried to click a selfie with the Indian batsman.

This incident took place during the 5th T20I between India and South Africa in Bengaluru, one which was washed out due to rain and led to the two teams sharing the series 2-2. India was batting first and Gaikwad was sitting in the dugout waiting for the rain to relax, padded up and ready to head out when the need arises.

At the time, a local member of the ground-staff was seen getting close to Gaikwad to click a picture with him. Gaikwad was taken aback and was quick to shove him in his shoulder, and gestured him to move away and leave the dugout. While Gaikwad has reached a good level in his professional career, this is not the behaviour we expected from him. See the video:

These are the people that toil hard all day and night to prepare the ground and pitches for Team India and our Indian players need to treat them slightly more respectfully. Even if Gaikwad needed to focus and wasn’t in the mood to click pictures, he could’ve told him in a much nicer way than he did in this instance.

There was already a lot of criticism over his performances in this series so far, with scores of 23, 1, 57, 5, and 10 in the five games he played. He now averages less than 17 in 8 T20 internationals for India, and this was not the additional limelight that he needed at this point of time. Social media was quick to make fun of his behaviour and most people called it bad and disrespectful and insulting. Take a look at how other Indian cricketers have dealt with fans and ground staff in the past:
