We witnessed something absolutely special today in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Something that hasn’t happened in the history of the tournament, and possibly hasn’t happened in any other tournament in the world either. Today was IPL 2023 Match 13 and the first of today’s double header when the most special match finish ever was witnessed in the Gujarat vs Kolkata clash.
29 runs were needed to win in the final over of this 200+ chase for Kolkata Knight Riders and after a single on the first ball, Rinku Singh was tasked with smashing 28 runs in the final 5 balls. And guess what?! He went on to do it. And he did it in style too, smashing 6, 6, 6, 6, 6 in five consecutive balls to take KKR over the line. Truly special stuff!
IPL 2023 – Rinku Singh 5 consecutive sixes
Singh’s KKR teammates and management were all over him when he hit the final six, pulling off the unthinkable and almost impossible. Rinku Singh’s 5 consecutive sixes will go down as one of the most iconic moments in IPL history and we don’t think he’s going to forget this night anytime soon. And the unfortunate bowler to be hit for 31 runs was GT’s left-arm pacer, Yash Dayal.
The first one was a missed yorker over extra cover. The full toss was put away and the second one was whipped over backward square leg for another six. Still no one would’ve imagined that he’d hit three more. Ball 4 – Another missed full toss and smashed over long off. Ball 5 – Slow ball, flat-batted over long on. Ball 6 – Again, over long on, giving us the most dramatic finish in IPL history.

With every hit, the GT team was getting more and more worried and by the time he hit the first three, the Titans were unaware of what was to be done. They need to be calm under pressure but instead, everyone was crowding around Dayal and giving him instructions. But Dayal was in the zone and there was nothing that could be done to stop him. Before the final over, 39 runs were needed in the last 8 balls and Rinku hit a four and six, leaving 29 runs in the final over. Not many took the final over seriously, as this big a target hasn’t been chased in the final over too many times in the past. He became only the fifth player to hit 5 sixes in an IPL match, after Chris Gayle, Marcus Stoinis, Rahul Tewatia, and the duo of Marcus Stoinis & Jason Holder. See the winning moment here:

Yash Dayal ended with 0/69 which will also go down in IPL history as the second most expensive spell in the league, after Basil Thampi’s 0/70 back in IPL 2018. It’s also the highest target chased in the final over of an IPL match to complete victory, passing the 23 chased down by Rising Pune Supergiants against Punjab in IPL 2016. What a day and what a moment for the young Rinku Singh!
