Every few years, the Indian premier League (IPL) hosts what is known as a mega auction, wherein all franchise teams have to completely revamp their squads and are allowed to retain only a minimal number of players. Ahead of the fifteenth edition of the IPL T20 tournament, we have another one of these coming up and everyone is super excited about the IPL 2022 auction.
Not just are we seeing the best of the world’s Test playing nations go under the hammer, but we’re also seeing a number of players from lesser known countries as well, with as many as seven players from associate nations also being listed. A total of 590 players will go under the hammer and today, we’ll discuss each team’s remaining purse going into this IPL 2022 mega auction.
IPL 2022 Auction – each team’s remaining purse
Like we mentioned above, each team was allowed to retain four players when they submitted their IPL 2022 retention lists. They spent on these players and from the new franchises (Lucknow and Ahmedabad), they purchased three players each in the IPL 2022 Player Draft. Each team had a starting purse of Rs.90 Crore and all of them have used up a chunk of that purse in player retentions.
Going into the 2022 IPL Auction, each team has a varying budget left which they can spend at the auction between 12-13 Feb 2022. From these teams, Delhi Capitals was the heaviest spender in retentions, so they are left with only 47.5 Crore to spend at the auction, which is the lowest from all ten franchises. This means we won’t see them going super aggressive for the top players.

All three of Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata are left with 48 Crore in the purse each, and we don’t think they’ll suffer too much at the auction, like Delhi will. These three have been the most successful of all IPL teams and they’ve always been very steady and consistent with their teams, so we’re sure they know what they want and will manage with their remaining budget at the IPL Auction 2022.
New IPL teams remaining purse
From the newer teams, we’ve got Ahmedabad running slightly low on fuel with only 52 Crore left in the purse, thanks to two big picks from the Player Draft in Hardik Pandya and Rashid Khan; see their salaries here. On the other hand is the Lucknow franchise which also picked up three players but spent less there, leaving themselves with 59 Crore going into the auction; see the salaries of their picks.
Bangalore has 57 Crore in their purse while Rajasthan and Hyderabad have amounts in the sixties still left to be spent, but the most comfortable will be Punjab Kings. They’ve had rotten luck with their teams and results, so are looking for a full revamp in IPL 2022. They also released their most expensive player in KL Rahul and are left with as much as 72 Crore in the bank!
